General Exclusions

While 1Cover Travel Insurance can help out in an emergency, we can’t provide cover for everything. Listed below are some of our key exclusions and scenarios which are generally not covered. If you’re not quite sure, feel free to get in touch with us here.

  • Non Australian citizens

You must be a resident of Australia to purchase travel insurance with 1Cover.  Australian Residents who are eligible for full Medicare benefits (not including Reciprocal Health Care Agreements) can purchase a 1Cover plan provided that you purchase the policy before your journey commences (unless you purchase an Already Overseas policy) and your journey ends in Australia on the end date shown on your certificate of insurance.

  • Invalid policies

We can’t cover you if you purchase a policy after you’ve already departed Australia, and you must have a return date to Australia in order to purchase a policy. While we do provide already overseas cover, this policy is only eligible to those under 63 and applies to a maximum of 90 days. Always check our PDS to check the conditions of your cover.

  • Cruises or ski trips (if you have not purchased our cruise or snow sport add-ons).

You must purchase our cruise pack in order to be covered on both domestic and international cruises. Similarly, if you do not purchase our ski sports pack, you would not be covered for any snow sport losses.

  • Disappointing holidays

Sub-par accommodation, misleading brochures, rainy forecasts, dry or unpalatable airline food, noisy hotel rooms, rude staff, or unremarkable entertainment- none of these are on your holiday wish list. However, we don't cover loss of enjoyment (that’s up to your travel provider to rectify). So be sure to do your research and make the best possible holiday choices.

  • Risky behaviours

Holidays are meant to be celebrated but, in some instances, engaging in risky behaviours can jeopardize your cover. Intoxication due to alcohol (leading to a claimable event), indulging in illicit substances and contracting a sexually transmitted disease are all considered exclusions under our policies. Should a claim result from any one of these actions, then we won’t be able to cover you.

  • Riding a motorcycle/moped/scooter without the correct license

Unless you are riding a low powered scooter under 50cc (which requires you to carry a valid Australian driver’s license), you will need a valid Australian motorcycle license, valid for the engine size you are intending to ride. In some countries, you may also require an International Driver’s Permit. Learn more about motorcycle & scooter cover.

  • high-risk adventure activities

We cover many adventure activities, but there are some we deem too risky to cover. These activities include parachuting, hang gliding, BASE jumping, gliding, mountaineering or rock-climbing using ropes or climbing equipment. While you are still entitled to participate in these activities, if something goes wrong when you do, you won't be able to claim with us for any potential outcomes.

  • unattended items

While stuff happens, 1Cover excludes cover for items left unattended or unsupervised. For instance, if your tablet is snatched from your unattended poolside cabana while you’re at the bar, it would not be covered under our policies. While all claims are assessed on their own merit, we ask that you don’t leave your items unattended and expect you to keep an eye on your belongings whenever possible. You would also be required to file a police report in order to claim for lost or stolen items.

  • invalid passports or visa

Whether you failed to apply for the right visa or didn’t leave enough time to renew your passport, incorrectly organising your trip isn't something we cover, so double check everything is in order before proceeding with your travel bookings. It's up to you to plan ahead and ensure you have the right documents for travel.

  • Breaking the law

For obvious reasons we can't help you out if you break the law or engage in criminal activities. And while the Australian government may assist, there are limits as to what can be done in you are arrested or detained overseas. Keep in mind that breaking the law extends to ignoring road rules or failing to wear a helmet when you are required to do so.

  • ignoring official warnings

If a government or other official body have issued a specific "Do Not Travel" or “Reconsider Your Need to Travel’ warning and you go anyway, you may be putting yourself in very serious danger. Additionally, travelling against government advice means we won’t cover any claims relating to that warning. Head to smartraveller.gov.au for the latest travel advice.

  • pandemics, epidemics or acts of war

1Cover does not provide cover pandemics or epidemics once they are ‘known’ or publicised in the media or on official government websites. Generally, our policies also do not provide cover for acts of war, or your choice to travel to, or remain in a destination where there are Do Not Travel warnings in place.

  • Travelling to seek and/or receive medical advice, treatment or review, including cosmetic surgery or fertility treatment

1Cover cannot provide cover if you are awaiting surgery, treatment, investigation or procedures for any current or yet to be diagnosed health conditions. There is also no cover if you are planning to travel for cosmetic surgery or fertility treatment. We also are  unable to cover if you are travelling against medical advice or been given a terminal diagnosis.

  • Events that are already known

1Cover does not provide cover pandemics or epidemics once they are ‘known’ or publicised in the media or on official government websites. Generally, our policies also do not provide cover for acts of war, or your choice to travel to, or remain in a destination where there are Do Not Travel warnings in place.

  • Not reading the pDS and assuming you were covered

Never assume that you'll be covered for something. We advise all our customer to  read the PDS before purchasing to ensure the product is right for you. If you have any questions, just contact us and let us help you out.

Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please see the PDS for full details.
