Travel Insurance for australia

Travelling within Australia? 1Cover's Domestic travel insurance covers you for things like trip cancellation, rental car excess, losing your luggage and family emergencies, but it doesn’t cover medical expenses while you holiday at home.

If you're hiring a car, it can also provide cover for the rental insurance excess which in most cases is far cheaper than you'll find at the depot. Plus, if  you're skiing or cruising domestically you can add extras to your policy to cover those.

domestic Travel Insurance FAQS

  • What is domestic travel insurance?
  • Domestic travel insurance is for Australian residents that provides cover for trips taken within Australia.

  • What constitutes a domestic trip?
  • 1Cover considers trips that are only 100km from your home a holiday. Not all insurers do so beware.

  • Do i need insurance when travelling domestically around australia?
  • There are risks wherever you travel - even on domestic trips. Incidents can easily happen in Byron or Bali, whether it's lost luggage or a delayed flight, or an unforeseen emergency at home means you can no longer travel. Domestic travel insurance is just as vital for holidays at home as well as trips overseas to help protect you from unexpected events outside of your control.

  • How much does Domestic travel insurance cost?
  • It largely depends on your age and how long you are travelling for. But for a 35 year old, without any pre-existing conditions, a week long policy costs around $50.

  • Am I Covered if i’m taking a domestic cruise?
  • Even if you are only cruising withing Australia waters, you need travel insurance, as Medicare will not cover you when you are out at sea. You must purchase our Cruise Pack add-on with your policy, selecting 'Australia Cruise' for your region.
This will ensure you are covered for emergency medical assistance and emergency medical and hospital cover, cancellations, missed departure and more. See our Cruise Travel Insurance page for more information.

  • What does domestic insurance cover with my rental vehicle?
  • Rental vehicle excess benefit does not take the place of Rental Vehicle insurance. However, if your Rental Vehicle is involved in an accident while you are driving, or is damaged or stolen while in your custody, you have provision to claim for a reimbursement of up to $5,000 (unless you have opted to increase your excess) for any excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay under your Rental Vehicle hiring agreement.

  • What if I take frequent domestic trips around Australia?
  • If you take frequent Domestic Trips, you might want to consider a Frequent Traveller Policy. This is a convenient way to save time and potentially money, if you travel regularly around Australia. Find out more about Annual or Frequent Traveller policies.

  • Does Domestic Cover include Medical Assistance?
  • While you are in Australia, we are unable to cover any domestic medical expenses. As a travel insurer, we can't take the place of health insurance. There is legislation in place to prevent this. If you are an Australian permanent resident or citizen, you will likely have access to Medicare or your private health insurance.

  • Are there any exclusions for Domestic Cover?
  • Depending on the type of policy you buy, most domestic travel insurance plans for Australia cover for things such as lost or damaged luggage and travel documents, rental vehicle insurance excess, additional expenses, amendment or cancellation costs, but they do not cover medical benefits because of the Australian health care system Medicare.

  • does domestic cover include covid?
  • 1Cover offers overseas medical coverage if you test positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) and require medical treatment while overseas, but we do not cover you medically when travelling domestically.  At this time we do not cover any cancellation costs or additional costs incurred because of Coronavirus (COVID-19). See our Covid hub for full information.

  • does domestic insurance cover cruises?
  • If you are travelling in Australian waters on a cruise liner you will need to purchase our Cruise Pack add-on with your policy, selecting 'Australia Cruise' for your region. This will ensure you are covered for emergency medical assistance and emergency medical and hospital cover, cancellations, missed departure and more. See our Cruise Travel Insurance page for more information.

  • Does Domestic travel insurance cover adventure activities?
  • 1Cover provides coverage for 100+ activities. While any medical costs arising from domestic activities can’t be covered, you may be covered for if you need to forfeit pre-paid fees or deposits if you're unable to travel. The reason we can’t cover medical costs is that we can't take the place of domestic health insurance. There is legislation in place to prevent this.

  • Does Domestic Travel Insurance Cover Flight Cancellations?
  • 1Cover domestic travel insurance you when your scheduled transport is cancelled due to severe weather, natural disaster, riots, strikes or civil unrest. Find out more about our flight cancellation cover.

  • Are events like bushfires covered?
  • Travel is unpredictable, even in Australia. Your journey could be delayed by events outside of your control - like weather or bushfires -  so we provide cover for additional accommodation and meal expenses.

  • Is There An Excess On My Domestic Travel Insurance?
  • There is a $200 excess that is applicable per event per claim.
