Benefits of Medical Only Travel Insurance

Medical only travel insurance specifically covers medical expenses incurred while travelling. Unlike comprehensive travel insurance policies, which may include coverage for trip cancellation, lost luggage, and other travel-related issues, medical only travel insurance focuses solely on health-related incidents. 1Cover’s medical only policy includes the following:

The one thing you need
when one thing goes wrong

Is a medical only policy right for me?

Depending on your trip plans and circumstances, medical only travel insurance may or may not fit your needs. While a medical only policy would cover your overseas medical costs only, a comprehensive policy would provide the same coverage, along with the below benefits:

- Cancellation cover: in the event you are unable to travel due to unforeseen circumstances.

-Luggage and personal belongings: cover for up to $15,000 in luggage and personal effects cover for losses or damages.

-Car rental excess:  Cover for exorbitant rental excess fees if your car is damaged/stolen.

-Additional accommodation and travel expenses: In the event that your travel plans are disrupted because of injury, illness or other disruptions.

-Credit card fraud: Cover for replacement or monetary costs in the event that you are the victim of credit card fraud.

-Loss of income: Cover for loss of income if you're injured or unwell for over a month upon your return home.

-Optional ski and snowboarding cover: Cover for your medical expenses and snow gear on your next ski trip, along with a list of other benefits.

The importance of medical cover when travelling overseas

When considering an overseas holiday, travel insurance should be a non-negotiable addition to your packing list.  But what many people may not know is the staggering cost of healthcare in some parts of the world, where basic medical care can set you back tens of thousands of dollars.  In the United States, for example, minor medical illnesses and injuries can lead to exorbitant costs. In fact, 1Cover has seen severe medical incidents resulting in millions of dollars in claim costs. Here are just some of the highest claim costs 1Cover has assisted with in recent years.

Million-dollar malady: $3,000,000
A 62-year-old man suffering from an infection required an extended hospital stay in a US hospital due to medical complications. His claim came to a total of $3,000,000.

Camel fall crisis: $100,000

A 63- year-old woman fell off her camel in the Saharan desert, resulting in multiple injuries and a medical escort flight home. Her claim came to a whopping $100,000.

Bali stomach saga: $80,000

A man in his sixties holidaying in Bali caught a parasitic bug which led to a stomach rupture and emergency surgery. His claim came to over $80,000.

Cat bite catastrophe: $60,000

A woman in her twenties required a series of rabies shots after being bitten by a cat in Costa Rica. Due to a lack of access, she had to be flown to the United States to obtain the vaccines. Her full claim cost came to $60,000.

What is Reciprocal Health Care?

In some parts of the world, Australia has reciprocal health care agreements, meaning that you will have access to certain medical healthcare benefits in the event of a medical emergency. However, relying solely on reciprocal healthcare coverage has limitations and does not entirely replace the need for travel insurance. For instance, it might not cover non-emergency treatments, medications, or specialized care.
